This plant is a succulent that is often called the African Spear Plant or Cylindrical Snake Plant The cylindrical leaves themselves also hold water and help the plant survive periods of extreme drought

The succulent is often sold as a braided plant In outdoor landscaping it is common to see this plant in a grouping of braided plants The braiding of the leaves is purely personal preference

It sometimes comes with colorful painted tips This doesn’t harm the plant however, the plant does not photosynthesize through paint For optimal plant health and growth, we would not recommend a painted Sansevieria plant

Sansevieria plants prefer well draining soil as the roots will rot quickly if they sit in moist soil A mix of potting soil, perlite and orchid bark will keep the roots happiest

The Sansevieria plant can grow in many different kinds of pots, but do require good drainage Repot every second year, or when roots come out the drainage holes on the pot bottom to the next pot size up

The plant will grow faster in bright indirect light  It will also grow just fine in lower light conditions, but the growth will be slower Make sure the snake plant isn't sitting in constant direct sunlight, the leaves can get burnt

Water your snake plant when the soil is dry at least 3 inches down These plants are typically drought resistant and can withstand longer periods of dryness compared to other houseplants

Apply a good quality fertilizer monthly through spring and summer Decrease feedings by late fall and allow the  plant to rest through the winter months

This plant will do best in temperatures between 55-85 degrees F.
